Buffy?” Alec asked lowly, concern spiking for her sudden increase of respirations and just the general heightened feeling of worry for her. But then, she seemed to be making the effort to control herself, slowing her breathing, closing her eyes, though the second didn't last long. Her shoulders hunched slightly before she turned to glance at him.

Sorry,” she offered a little sheepishly. “I think I know what you mean. This whole thing? It makes my entire stomach knot up and twist and gurgle and just don't like it. Really want to avoid the painful, twisty knots it brings.”

Yeah, me too,” he grinned, relieved, but not pleased. Not happy because having to press down all these feelings, the good and the bad was getting to be a mish mash of confusion that his linear thinking mind did not appreciate. Recognized completely, but also knew that this could lead down a path of badness. “So,” he smirked, “we can either avoid the subject still, which sounds good to me, or...”

Or?” she asked, an answering smirk hovering on her lips.

Well, I've got nothing else,” he chuckled. “Because the alternative is just too annoying to deal with right now. Besides, if we were to talk about this,” he waved his hand into the space between them, “it might cause a problem for Tara.”

How so?” she wondered, eyes lighting and truly seeming curious this time.

Because if I say something, then you say something, then those something's are in our mind,” he explained cheekily. “And then when we say it to Tara, we might say the one or the other, but how would she know which is correct?”

Oh, so for the integrity of Tara's interrogation we should maintain our silence on the subject and whoa, not gonna try saying that three times fast,” Buffy chuckled, though it sounded just a little forced.

Sure,” Alec nodded quickly, chuckling too. “But yeah, exactly. So I propose a new set of choices.”

Those being?” she wondered quickly. Alec shrugged his shoulders.

We keep talking about something completely different,” he suggested, before glancing at his watch. “Or, you crash on my bed, I take the couch and we try to catch a few hours of sleep.”

Oh Alec,” Buffy sighed, wrinkling up her nose. “I'm sorry. You have to work in the morning, don't you? See? Sorry, not used to that sort of thing since... my mom.”

So you never had to get up for early morning classes, or what, even in high school?” he teased.

Oh well, yeah,” she nodded, not ignoring the way he skipped over an entirely uncomfortable subject, which she suspected that he did for her, but maybe, given what he had said to Logan, might also apply to him. If obviously, as his mother at the very least, from what she had gleaned, had passed on as well. “But in high school, it wasn't so unusual for me to drop off for a nap here or there. Occasionally,” she stressed with a small forced grin. No use in telling him what had caused her to be so tired in the mornings. “You'd think,” she added, “with only one club in town and not even a good club, we wouldn't have been such party animals.”

Oh, I don't know about that,” Alec muttered, his eyes gleaming again. “If you hadn't been going to a club, something tells me that you and your friends would have found something else to get up to.”

Oh yeah,” Buffy scoffed. “Roaming the streets to ticket litterers, or... or well, there were the marathon Indian channel nights.”

The what?” he gasped out, his face crinkling into a puzzled mien.

Oh, just a night where we'd sit around watching non-dubbed Indian movies, not Native American movies, but the ones from India, where the actresses would dance around a harem singing about gold coins and snakes and be heartbroken, but you couldn't tell because they were smiling all the time and braiding Willow's hair,” she finished, a little winded at the long explanation.

The actresses were braiding Willow's hair?” Alec teased and Buffy rolled her eyes.

Yes, we had this amazing invention called the interactive screen of doom,” she snarked right back. “You had to be careful what you watched. But luckily, with Will's red hair, they all thought she was a fire demon that would destroy their totally make up tv worlds unless they pleased her with offerings of ribbons and chocolate.”

Oh man,” Alec pouted, playing along with a repressed smirk. “My childhood feels so deprived now, what with the regular television of news reports and music videos. How did I live without this amazing invention?”

Oh yeah,” Buffy scoffed, glancing down at her tea cup. “Back in the good ol' days, when there were only a hundred cable channels to choose from...”

And you could buy all the chocolate you wanted for a quarter,” Alec continued teasing, “and you had to walk to school, uphill, both ways and video games were played in arcades.”

Oh please,” Buffy half snorted. “Chocolate? For a quarter? That would have been my grandparents day. And we had video game consoles. I'm not that old!”

No, I guess you're not,” Alec nodded and then chuckled. “Though you are. But damn if you don't look really good for your true age.”

Yeah,” she murmured and Alec wondered if he'd put his foot in it. But then she glanced up at him once more. “Did I tell you that Tara and I chose a new birthday for me?”

No, don't think you mentioned that,” he noted, watching her play idly with the handle of the mug she held. “Any reason why you needed a new one?”

Because me looking like me, giving birth to myself on my own birthday might throw up a few red flags that a Seattle government official might raise an eyebrow too,” she quipped.

Yeah, I'd see that eyebrow and raise a sneer as well,” Alec grinned. “Trouble with establishing your identity? I mean,” he added swiftly, unable to tell her, to share his own troubles in that department. “I can imagine there's all sorts of troubles. But that's what you picked. To be your own daughter,” he reminded her.

She shrugged slowly. “Can you think of anything else that would explain...?” and she pointed one finger at her face.

Lot's of things,” Alec admitted. “Logan's the only one here that knows you, right? Been a long time. You could have had an entirely new identity. Like, oh high financier just moved from New York to take over a company, but they went under just after your reassignment.”

If math were a friend of mine, maybe,” she scoffed.

Oh please,” it was Alec's turn to snort. “Logan wouldn't shut up about those test scores you got.”

Seriously?” Buffy's eyes widened. “My whole life... up until that point and that's what stuck with him?”

Yeah,” Alec mused, tilting his head back against the curve of the sofa for a moment. “You probably don't know this yet about your cousin, but once something interesting comes to his attention, he tends to get obsessive about it.”

Oh, that's nothing new,” Buffy grimaced. “You should have seen him and Dawn...” she trailed off, quickly pressing a hand to her chest. Alec was instantly regretting even moving onto a topic that caused that look of pain in her eyes. “Sorry,” she whispered suddenly. He inched forward, his hand reaching for her shoulder.

No, no,” he soothed. “I'm sorry. I wasn't even thinking.”

It's not your fault,” Buffy shook her head before glancing up at him. “Just... really having a hard time believing that she's supposed to be gone. I can still feel her, like she's out there somewhere.”

That must be difficult,” he sighed. As much as Max had purported that he and Ben, X5-493 were twins, that wasn't the truth. They were cloned embryos and there had never been a twin bond, such as real siblings might have endured. There were very few people in this world that Alec could claim having any kind of bond with. Some days... he wondered. “Is it tougher to try and pretend that she's not around, anywhere? Or is it tougher to maintain that she is when everyone else tells you your wrong?”

Both,” she answered after a moment. “It hurts to think that she's out there and no one knows. Hurts to wonder if she's okay, maybe living a life, like she should. Or that she doesn't know, or maybe she does and there's something keeping her from me. Hurts even more to think that maybe Logan's right. That she's really gone and this feeling is...”

All in your head?” he murmured. Her eyes were luminous with unshed tears.

Yeah,” she mumbled brokenly and Alec was suffused with the urge to comfort her even more. But something about her stiffly held posture told him that she wasn't ready for comfort of a physical level that he wanted to inundate her with. Instead, he drew his hand back from her shoulder to lean his own head on it as he regarded her.

So tell me, what makes Dawn Summers the most awesome little sister in the world?” he asked gently and was relieved when she looked up at him gratefully and then with a strangled snort, laughed.

To tell the truth, she was a whiny, gangly holy terror,” she grumbled, though he could hear the affection throbbing in her voice. “When we were little, it was okay. Kind of cool to have this kid think that I was the greatest thing in the world. You know?”

He didn't but it was a relief that she was talking about it without breaking down completely, so he smiled and nodded and continued to listen.

When Alec woke, he felt the stiffness and weight immediately. Coming awake, to instant alertness and stillness was something ingrained from a lifetime of Manticore and never knowing where you might end up and in what situation. So he had plenty of time to assess the situation before deciding what to do.

The view of his ceiling wasn't all that surprising. The feel of his couch that his body was molded against wasn't anything too new either, having fallen asleep on it before. Usually, he'd lay down, but the weight of something pressed against his left arm, shoulder and leg told him that they'd never gotten that far. The scent of Buffy's shampoo filling his nostrils reminded him exactly who that somebody was and why they'd not made it past the couch.

Turning his head, Alec saw the slightly troubled features that he could make out under a thick strand of hair falling over her cheek. He frowned and shifted a little. Even her dreams couldn't let her be, apparently. As he shifted, several areas of stiffness protested, mostly his hand that had gone slightly numb from the pressure of her body against it and lack of blood rushing freely back and forth through the veins. The slightl movement though seemed to have started the wake up process for Buffy as she flared her nostrils slightly and turned her face several times, sweeping her cheek over his shoulder, before she pushed herself upright and blinked at him.

Morning,” he rumbled, his voice lower with remnants of sleep and non use for several hours.

Ugh,” she groaned as her eyes drifted down to apparently assess their positions. She sighed. “Sorry.”

'Bout what?” he wondered. “Fallin' asleep on the couch? Nothing too nefarious about that.”

No. The uh...” she rolled her eyes and brought her hand up to point at his shoulder. “That's one of the obvious dangers of falling asleep on someone.”

Alec glanced down at his shoulder again and instantly saw what she meant, the small, wet circle and now that she was no longer leaning on him, brought his hand up to start shaking off the unpleasant sensation of deadening in his arm. “Drooler, huh?” he teased. “That's okay, I can always spin that into something much sexier than it was, if you want?”

It's just horrible that you know that about me at all,” Buffy complained as she lifted her arms to try stretching out her back. Alec couldn't help appreciating the movement from a purely physical stand point, but was quick to hide it. Not because he was ashamed, but because he sensed that she really wasn't ready to handle something of that nature... still.

Well, I didn't have a chance to check out the top of your head before you sat up,” Alec warned, his voice still gruff, though he was thoroughly amused and sure that she could see it. “So you might be able to assume-!”

Oh God! Please don't tell me that you drooled in my hair?” she winced. Alec chuckled and shrugged, and then it was his turn to wince at the movement pulled even more at sore muscles and a fresh rush of blood made it's way down to his smaller extremities. Namely his fingers. Buffy's hands darted up, but she hesitated.

Can't say I did,” he teased once more. “Or didn't, but if it helps, your hair isn't doing that weird stiff thing that happens when you add... product to it.” And with that reassurance, her hands ruffled through her hair and she gave an appreciable noise.

All dry,” she announced. And then, as she scooted to the edge of the sofa, she glanced around. “This is weird.”

What's weird?” Alec wondered as he pushed off the furniture and swung his torso around, his feet planted on the floor at shoulder width apart. He heard a small pop as his spine realigned a slight measure.

That it wasn't weird or embarrassing to wake up... on you, you know?” she explained.

Not really,” he agreed. “Probably because we just slept,” he decided. “Nothing horrible about that. Although it does say something.”

Sleeping says...?” Buffy wondered and then her eyes widened. “I wasn't talking in my sleep, was I?” she demanded.

Not that I'm aware of,” Alec shook his head. “No, just meant, that it can take an awful lot of trust to sleep with another person around.”

So my falling asleep on you wasn't about being tired,” she murmured, “it's cause I trust you?”

As much as I trust you too,” he pointed out and was pleased as a small grin spread over her face.

Well yeah, that is... not horrible,” she decided. “So...?”

Well, since it's,” Alec began turning his wrist and fiddling to get the watch face twisted around so that he could read it, “ah crap. Ten thirty,” he winced and rubbed his free hand over his eyes. “Late for work,” he explained quickly. “So, quick plan, you go ahead and use the bathroom if you need it while I get my stuff. I'll hop in and change and then I will run you home and then go offer abject apologies to Normal and hopefully still have a job at the end of the day.”

Or,” Buffy nodded, “I can go to the bathroom, you can call your boss and tell him that a small emergency came up and you'll be in as soon as it's dealt with.”

That works too,” Alec agreed with a chuckle. “Either way though, could ya hurry? Last night's tea is not this morning's friend with the bladder.”

Oh right,” she nodded, a faint blush staining at her cheeks as she dashed over to the smallest room in the apartment.

It didn't take long for them to get ready, since Buffy had no new clothes to change into. Alec made sure that she had her visitor issued city pass before they left the apartment and was tempting her into stopping at a little diner he knew to grab some breakfast, his treat, as they walked down the stairs to the outside of his apartment building. Since he had taken her idea, calling Normal and telling the man in all seriousness what had happened, that Buffy had gotten lost and because it was so close to curfew, she had crashed at his place and he was taking her home. That they'd overslept because they had been talking over the fire and all the things that had been upsetting her, Normal had actually understood and told him not to worry about being late. To just take care of his young lady, since she wasn't used to Seattle yet and making her walk an hour on her own was not tenable in Normal's books. He'd just be down for a six hour shift instead of an eight.

That worked out for Alec just perfectly. And Buffy, her stomach rumbling for once, decided that her clothes could pass muster for a diner. When they got down to the garage, for the building's tenants, Alec led her straight to his lime green Ducati bandit. Her eyes widened as she took it in.

Not what you expected?” he teased as he slung his leg over it, straightening the bike up so that she could join them. “We can always walk if you'd prefer that.”

No, it's okay,” she shook her head. “Green's just too bright for my eyes. You sure that color is legal?”

Hey, just makes it that much easier to spot in a parking lot,” he sniffed, as if mildly offended, though he wasn't. It wasn't like there had been a lot of choice when he had needed something immediately for transportation. Buffy shrugged and when he had scooted forward, reached out to balance herself with a hand on his shoulder as she swung her leg over the seat. He felt her moving behind him, centering herself as he had, before her hands tentatively came to rest at his waist. “Ready?” he asked over his shoulder. “I'll take it easy,” he promised, “since I don't have helmets here...” he trailed off, but she said nothing of it.

I'm good,” she replied and Alec turned the key. Like Max's ninja, the bandit was an automatic. There might be something satisfying about kick starting a bike, but it wasn't always the most reliable start when you needed to make a fast getaway. He let the engine idle for a moment, warming up, pleased that the noise and feel of the engine didn't seem to cause Buffy any undue stress or surprise. When he eased them forward, slowly, to make sure that she really was good, he felt her inner thighs tighten at his hips, though her hands remained loose. A wild grin curved his lips. Oh yeah, she was good.

They made it to the diner he had been thinking of when he mentioned it to her and when he pulled into the curb to park, he looked her over and was pleased to see that her eyes were sparkling slightly, even as she fussed with her hair. He held his hand up to help her climb off before knocking the kickstand down.

I'd forgotten how much fun those are,” she grinned as she stood on the sidewalk while Alec powered down and locked the engine. “You know, it's been forever since I... not since Pike, back at Hemery High.”

Hemery High?” Alec wondered.

Before we moved to Sunnydale,” she explained. “That was my school, um...”

The one that you burned down?” Alec teased as he clambered off the bike, making sure that it settled on the stand properly.

Hey!” she protested, her eyes wide and then she coughed and mumbled something.

What was that?” Alec taunted, leaning close.

I said it was just the gym and I didn't actually start the fire,” she grumbled. “I was just blamed for it.”

Good to know pyro,” Alec continued to tease as he led the way into the diner, holding the door open for her.

Nicknames, lovely,” Buffy snorted. They continued to tease and chat, which Alec was more than happy about, as they decided to order the breakfast platter, with two plates, since everything else seemed like too much for Buffy to manage on her own. Alec was inordinately pleased to see that ham seemed to be back on the menu. It had been a while.

When he mentioned it to Buffy, after they had taken their seats in a booth, that opened up more conversation. After their coffee was delivered, they talked about what they might expect out of their days. For Alec it would be work. Buffy was sort of expecting to spend more time with Tara and mentioned the possibility again that Tara might stick around Seattle while Buffy got settled in. Alec could see how she liked that idea and told her that he'd be more than happy to check with his contacts about finding Tara somewhere to live that didn't charge by the night. Or barring that, Max or Cindy might know. Buffy promised to ask Tara about it and let them know what was decided. When the platter arrived, something like a trucker's special, Alec allowed Buffy to spoon off the portions she wanted onto her own plate before taking some for himself. And she ate, which was a relief. And then took seconds. Of course, it was barely enough to keep a bird alive, in Alec's opinion, but she was managing and spun the right way, the news would make Logan happy.

After he'd paid and they made their way through the city to Logan's corner penthouse in Fogle Towers, passing with general ease through the sector checkpoints, both were in pretty good moods. That however, ended as they pulled up to the curb across from the building, to find that there was something of a kerfluffle going on.

I told you!” Logan's strident voice rang out from the building's security doors. Alec's eyes widened as he saw Logan holding firm to the door as someone else seemed to be trying to yank it open. “She'll be home later. I'll have her call you.”

You called me in a panic last night because she didn't come home!” the other man growled, one that was quickly recognized, Alec not needing Buffy's breathed out, exasperated ''Angel!' to recognize the lumbering build. “And she's still not home. What if-!”

She's fine,” Logan insisted. “You're making a scene!”

Then let me in and-!” But Angel stopped then, apparently alerted to Buffy's presence, since Logan had just caught sight of them across the street, his body sagging in slight relief, though both Buffy and Alec could read the suppressed ire in his face and frame. The door, swinging open a little more was just another hint to Angel, who twisted around and quickly honed in on Buffy, sitting on the back of the Ducati, with Alec. “Buffy!” he shouted, losing all interest in her cousin and turning to dart out into the street. His face was thrown into sharp relief as he emerged from the shadow of the building, striding towards them.

Alec, feeling protective, a little territorial, of course, with this large man bearing down on them, felt it worsen when for the first time that morning, felt Buffy shudder, her hands curling reflexively into his sides. She was upset. Angel, once again was making her upset, and that animal inside of 494 wasn't having any of it, when he heard her pained gasp. But before he could even begin to react, because mostly he just wanted to pull his feet up, rev the engine and peel out of there until she was somewhere she felt safe, he felt her sliding away. His chest rumbled an unintentional protest as he quickly adjusted for the weight shift. And then he could only watch as he scrambled to keep up, as Angel was heading straight for her and was met with a very angry, very powerful right cross, that landed the other man flat on his ass.

It was music to Alec's ears as Buffy stood over the rival, her hands on her hip.

Angel, you bastard!”

Chapter Twelve
Temperamental Discourse

Buffy made her way down the supper line, critically eying the offerings before the student populace this evening. It actually looked fairly edible for once and deciding quickly, gestured to the chicken and rice dish. She received her plate and moved down to add some salad to her plate.

She had had a fairly quiet afternoon in the library after Sam had left. But instead of finding it calming, her mood was less calm. She had been sure that had that idiot been treating books the way they were supposed to, nicely, without slamming it and making with the big echoing banging noise, well then, she could have had Sam kisses. She could admit to herself that she'd been wanting smoochies from this guy for a little while now. After spending an hour in a sauna with him, he behaving like a perfect gentleman, how could she not? Falling asleep to thoughts of that toned, long, lean body on many a night was definitely leading to thoughts of the inappropriately naughty type.

But Sam had seemed shy and that morning, seeing how his face had lit up when they'd sat together in class, Buffy wondered if he just needed a nudge or two. She was a fairly modern woman, but in cases like these, she didn't want to be too pushy. Look where that had gotten her with Angel. Or, even worse, with Parker the jerk. But Sam wasn't just your every day ordinary guy either. He was funny, witty without being hurtful. He was quiet without being broody. He could go out in the sunlight, looked really good in the sunlight. But he was comfortable in the dark places too. Like that alley when Dracula had found her. And in the library.

She had shown him that flyer for the party at the Kappa house and his smile had grown. When she had taken his hand, a hint if there ever was one, it had felt so right that she hadn't wanted to let go and when they had taken a few steps down the aisle between the seats and then he hadn't let go either, Buffy was sure that he was finally getting the idea. Or maybe he'd had the idea and now she was giving him a green light. Oh boy did she want to give him a green light. Go, no stops, full speed ahead!

And once he'd gotten that first indication to go, he wasn't speeding, but he wasn't reversing at all. A nice steady pace and Buffy supposed that was all right too. After all, they couldn't just jump into being together. And it was nice, being in that space where everything was still new and exciting. She liked that. But she also liked the being so comfortable with one another that you could finish the others thoughts and share things about yourself that no one else could ever know. She wondered, with a small frown as she chose a seat at random, where no one else was at the moment, if she could ever really get there with Sam.

She had with Angel, but he being a vampire, kind of gave him the insight into her being the Slayer. It wasn't something that was going to go away, apparently, even if she had left it for a while. But Scott Hope, Parker Abrams, all of the guys that she had met so far in life since becoming the Slayer told her that it wasn't likely. Maybe Xander's joking suggestion, that she'd only find a guy that could accept her being a Slayer, that the world was larger, older and a little more dangerous than your average thought, would be one of those geeky role playing nerds that already lived in a delusion... she shook her head quickly to clear that thought.

But maybe he was onto something. Maybe finding a guy, she had to start somewhere adjacent to normal and supernatural. Somewhere were she'd hopefully find some normal, but open to the supernatural. She wasn't so full of herself to think that she'd never be able to keep the other part of her life away from someone who could be so important. And if she were honest with herself, she really wanted someone like that to be Sam. But she didn't know him anywhere near well enough to know...

She sighed heavily.

Those sound like awfully heavy thoughts weighing you down there,” she heard from across the table. She glanced up quickly, her lips forming into a smile before she even fully registered who was across from her.

Sam, hi,” she perked up immediately. He was holding a tray with his dinner and before he could say anything else, she gestured to the table. “You're welcome to join, if only to chase the deep thoughts away.”

His answering grin as he leaned over to set his tray down warmed her right to the core. “I guess it depends on where the heavy thoughts came from,” he offered as he pulled the chair out and settled into it. He slid his backpack under the table before straightening up to scoot his chair in. “Nothing bad, I hope,” he offered with a hopeful tone as he tilted his head a little.

Buffy quickly shook her head. “Old dilemma,” she explained without explaining a thing. “Actually, I was just thinking over next semester's courses.”

Oh?” he asked easily as he broke apart a roll and began to butter it. “Is there a conflict?”

Maybe,” she shrugged one shoulder and went back to picking out bites of her salad. “I'm not as interested in the drama course that Willow wanted me to take. She's always been shy, stage fright, you know,” she added though of course, not knowing Willow, he wouldn't. But it was a universal ailment that everyone understood.

That's not uncommon,” Sam nodded, giving appropriate weight to the topic, looking thoughtful. “I suppose she took the course so that she could try and get over that?”

Buffy nodded. “And her girlfriend Tara,” she kept one eye on him as she announced that, but there wasn't even the slightest flicker from him and she smiled to herself, “was supposed to take it with her, but she couldn't fit it in with her schedule.”

Well, it's not like it would be the same course,” Sam noted, “in two different schools with two different teachers.”

Yeah,” Buffy agreed. “I think she just wanted someone to talk to about it that was going through the same sort of thing. But if I learned anything from my high school play, I am not cut out to be an actor. Or a public speaker.”

You were in a play in high school?” Sam chuckled.

You weren't?” she countered, flushing slightly. Sam shook his head in the negative.

Never had the chance,” he grunted with a frown. “What were you in?”

Oh, it wasn't actually a play,” Buffy shook her head. “It was the talent show and our Principal decided that certain people, troubled youth,” she hinted heavily, “needed to make a mandatory appearance doing something. And since Xander, Wills and I aren't all that talented, in a way acceptable to a school related, public event, we decided to do a recital of Pygmalion.”

Really?” Sam's grin slowly grew into a very amused smile. “How bad was it?”

Willow ran off the stage and threw up,” Buffy smirked back. “Otherwise, stilted, uncomfortable and I never forgave that toady rat for making us miserable.” Sam laughed, like he couldn't help himself.

A toady rat?” he repeated. “How does someone manage to be a toad and a rat at the same time?”

It's all in the eyes,” she assured him with a slight cackle. “He was about my height, balding and slimy, but his eyes? Those beady little eyes and he had a slight twitch.”

Okay, I can see that,” Sam nodded, still chuckling. After the merriment calmed, he looked thoughtful before asking, “so if you don't take the drama course, are you going to just leave your time free or find something else?”

Well,” Buffy sighed and then realized that she sort of had a chance to start feeling Sam out on some other things that had just been preying on her mind. “I did have something in mind. I'm not sure how popular the class would be, but if I look into it now, I might be able to switch.”

What's that?” Sam encouraged quickly.

There's a myths and legends of the old world class that sounds like it would be interesting,” she offered hesitantly.

Myths and legends?” Sam repeated slowly and Buffy felt like there was a band of apprehension tightening across her middle. She nodded.

Well, remember,” she prompted quietly, “we ran into that role player? I mean, yes, obviously you remember. But with my psychology classes, I got really interested in the mind set. Why would someone want to live in that world. And it also got me thinking, where do these dark images come from. Vampires, werewolves, zombies. Because obviously it's not all internal,” she shrugged. She wasn't able to tell Sam the truth, about her, but there was truth in her words too, as they pertained to the non-supernatural populace of the world. “There's the cultures that we live in, but it's not just Americans. Each culture has their legends and variations on some pretty basic themes.”

You're right about that,” Sam nodded, seemingly over his hesitation. “That does sound interesting.”

Yeah?” Buffy smiled shyly. She felt relieved, of course she did. But if Sam knew really, he wouldn't look so amused, would he? She poked at a piece of chicken with her fork and shrugged. “I tried to introduce the topic, sort of, in my world history class, but got shut down pretty fast.”

Really?” Sam perked up a little. “What were you talking about?”

Rasputin,” she answered succinctly. “We were talking about all the repeated assassination attempts on him and I brought up the possibility that there was something else going on there, but of course, ol' stick in the mud professor wanted us to just stick to the facts,” she grumbled. “I mean, we weren't there, how did we have all the 'facts'?” she held up her fingers to make air quotes.

Well what do you think it was?” Sam asked curiously, leaning a little closer, his dinner apparently forgotten.

No clue,” she chuckled. “buy you have to agree that repeated poisonings, stabbings and drowning before he finally died? Mighty strange.”

Strange yes, but that doesn't naturally lend itself to it being a supernatural reason behind it, does it?” Sam wondered, his eyebrows drawing together.

No, you're right and I wasn't trying to say it was,” Buffy defended herself. “Just introduce the possibility that there were facts that we didn't know and that accepted points of view on this weren't correct just because they'd been spouted so long that they are now accepted as fact instead of still a theory.”

Oh, now I can totally get on board with that,” Sam nodded, looking very interested again. “Logical rational thinking and all that.”

Oh, so you like thinking in the box?” she teased a little.

Oh there's no box,” he laughed back. “There's always a reason for everything. Even if you can't see it. And it's not always the reason people think that it is. But I think you're right, that people have been saying things over and over and accepting it as the truth because there's no other explanation available to them. I mean, science is only really starting to explode now and give us the rational explanation for things that people felt instinctively was true, based on nothing much more than feelings and their own observations.”

Like the earth being round instead of flat,” Buffy offered an old argument and even though they weren't in exactly the same place, it was kind of fun discussing this with Sam. Maybe because he hadn't just shut her down.

Or Vampires that don't exist as creatures of the dark, but are victims of a blood disorder,” he provided helpfully. Buffy nodded. That was something that she had learned about in the course of having Giles on one of his spiels in high school.

Exactly,” she nodded. And then blushed when she realized how loud she had been. “Sorry, it's just... a fascinating topic.”

It definitely is,” Sam agreed quietly, his eyes intent on hers and Buffy felt herself melting a little. After a moment, he cleared his throat and looked down at his plate. “So, it sounds like switching to this myths and legends course would be an interesting parallel with your psychology courses.”

I really think it would,” Buffy agreed happily. And now she seriously was thinking of switching. “Of course, since I didn't take it last year, it would be a beginners course.”

It is?” Sam looked interested and almost, dare she say it, hopeful again. She nodded.

I think I'll speak to my guidance officer on Monday about switching classes then,” she decided. “That way there'll be plenty of time to arrange it. So how about you, are you happy with next semester's offerings?”

Pretty happy, yeah,” Sam nodded. I got everything I wanted and plenty of time to get the material accomplished, the reading, the homework and reports.”

That's always good,” she noted. “And I hope you left room to relax too.”

That's what weekends are for, right?” Sam chuckled. “Oh, speaking of which, there's another meeting of the fencing club tomorrow night. I just saw them putting up the flyers earlier.”

Oh, good to know,” Buffy grinned and set her fork down. “I should probably write that in my planner so I don't forget.” She turned to reach for her bag, intending on doing so immediately. She didn't want to forgo a chance of seeing Sam getting all... sweaty. But as she reached for the opening of her bag, she heard the definitive tone of her cell phone. “Huh,” she harrumphed, recognizing the tone set to her mother's house phone. “Sorry,” she apologized, grabbing up the phone. “I should probably answer that.”

No problem,” Sam grinned back and directed his attention to his dinner.

Hello?” Buffy asked, fully expecting to hear her mother or Dawn's voice greeting her back. To her surprise, it was Xander.

Buff? We got problems,” he swung right into it and Buffy frowned.

What kind of problems?” she asked. “Is everything all right? Where's Mom and Dawn?”

Well, your mom needed me to babysit tonight,” Xander explained quickly, sounding upset and Buffy let a small grin loose.

Oh, I bet Dawn loved that,” she smirked, fully aware of her sister's crush on her friend.

Yeah,” Xander grunted. “We were all having a merry time until a brick came crashing through the living room window.”

Ooh,” Buffy groaned. “Don't freak too much. Mom will understand. Do you know who threw it?” She eyed Sam, who she noted, was attempting to listen, but trying to appear not to.

It was Harmony,” Xander sighed. “And her gang.”

Harmony?” she repeated slowly. Why was this a surprise? Harmony threw a brick through her mother's window. She couldn't help it as she startled to giggle. “Harmony? She has... a gang?” The laughter swelled and even Sam seemed affected as he smirked at her.

Well, maybe one of her minions,” Xander grunted.

Harmony has minions?” she shrieked softly and put her free hand over her eyes as her shoulders continued to shake with her mirth. “She came to my house with minions?”

Yeah, she wanted to call you out,” Xander sighed. That just caused the paroxysm of laughter to bubble up out of her throat.

Oh my God!” she cackled. “That half wit! I'm not even there. She came to... oh! Oh!” she gasped and covered the phone with her hand and glanced at Sam. “really really stupid girl from high school that we used to feud with. She's just... is it possible for people to grow stupider with age? Because really, she did.” She couldn't tell Sam of course, that Harmony was a vampire, but still, it was rude to not explain something.

My brother comes to mind,” Sam grunted and then chuckled before shaking his head.

Buffy took several more calming breaths. “Okay, so aside from the window, how is this bad?” she wanted to know. They'd dealt with Harmony before. She was so pathetic, Buffy was pretty sure that she'd end up staking herself, or annoy another Vampire into it and then, well... problem solved.

Well, um Dawn, totally by accident Buffy, you have to know that,” Xander hemmed and hawed and Buffy grew still.

What did Dawn do?” she asked with laser precision cutting each word out of her mouth.

She um, she sort of told Harmony to come in and prove herself,” Xander winced. She could hear it over the phone line.

That little idiot!” she exploded, her hand slamming down on the table. Sam was startled, as were several other people, but Buffy could not be worried about them at the moment. Her sister had just, she'd been informed, very stupidly invited a Vampire into the house. It didn't matter how dimwitted Harmony was. She was still a Vampire and stronger than the others. She could only hope that there was a dusty end to this story, but she doubted there was. “Did you call Faith?” She demanded.

As soon as we got Harmony out of the house,” Xander assured her. “She came and chased them off and we called Willow to do the de-invitation spell. She's on her way.”

Buffy calmed a little. At least they were thinking the right way. “Okay, good.”

But Buff,” Xander grunted and Buffy felt the bottom of her stomach drop out.

What?” she asked slowly, raising worried eyes that met equally worried eyes from Sam who had abandoned any pretense of eating or politely ignoring her call.

Um, Faith was kind of yelling at Dawn for being so stupid and she got upset and ran off,” Xander hurried to get what surely had to be the worst news. “Anya tried to stop her, but they were waiting in the back yard. Ahn was hurt.”

Oh God,” Buffy gasped. “How bad?”

Concussion,” he friend answered and Buffy gulped, she felt something touch her hand and was startled until she realized that Sam had moved around the table to crouch next to her. She grabbed his hand and he threaded his fingers with her as his hand came up to support her back. “And her arm. We're waiting for the ambulance. Faith went after Dawn. But she was too late. One of Harmony's goons grabbed her. I'm sorry Buffy. Really.”

No,” she whispered as fear surged through her. “No, I know,” she murmured. “I'll be there as soon as I can,” she decided. She heard her friend murmuring as she hung up the phone. It dropped from her suddenly lifeless hand, clattering on the table.

Buffy?” Sam questioned softly from beside her and she turned a little. He was just a blurry figure before her tear filled eyes. How could this have happened?

They took her,” she managed to get out. “Some guy took my sister, Sam,” she choked out and then collapsed in his arms.

Chapter Eleven

Blessings Of The Season

Wow,” Buffy murmured. She was still recovering from her fight with the uber-vamp that she and Giles had discovered just prior to Christmas. Dawn had, in the ensuing events, her concern for her only close family left, forgotten about Joshua's present that he had sent her. Worry and fear for her sister's condition was what pounded through her day and night. But Buffy was on the road to recovery, even though her spirit still seemed not quite broken, but brooding. Determined and unsure depending on what time of the day you saw her.

So Dawn had arranged for a quiet private time just for them to open some gifts. They were sitting in Buffy's room, the one that had belonged to their mother before Willow and Tara had moved in that long ago summer. So many bad memories could be associated with this room, and Dawn found herself concentrating on the painting a little harder.

It's amazing, isn't it?” she asked a little breathlessly. The painting was large, but not too big and Joshua had found an old frame for it. Somehow the used frame, that had been through who knew how long and what, lent a quiet seriousness that was echoed in the painting. The blues and browns were not what she had expected at all, but felt familiar inside her so that when she thought Joshua it felt like the painting vibrated with his words and his jokes. It was just so right.

I love this, right here,” Buffy smiled as she stretched her hand out, not touching but gesturing to the painting. Her finger traced in the air over the section she meant. “It's like, there's his heart,” she chuckled. Dawn tilted her head and then nodded after a moment.

Yeah, it is, but almost hidden so that you only see parts of it,” she noted.

I think that was the point,” Buffy mused. “That he's showing it to you little by little, but you can see how big his heart is because it echoes over here and here,” she gestured to more areas. The color was in more areas and Dawn took a step back.

Oh yeah,” she giggled. “There it is.” She sighed happily. “And the brown, his eyes are brown. It's like how much he sees, but he's still looking for more. Like he wants to see everything.”

And the blue,” Buffy agreed. “All those different shades. Some of them make you sad, some are happy. Like he's sad by some of the things he sees, but maybe later something else gives him hope.”

This is just amazing,” Dawn sniffled. Her sister glanced curiously at her and then gingerly wrapped her arm around Dawn's waist. The younger girl didn't reciprocate, knowing instinctively that Buffy's ribs were still too tender for that kind of affection and solidarity.

You okay?” Buffy whispered.

It's just, this is the most amazing thing that someone has given me,” Dawn continued to sniffle. And then coughed. “Well, I mean aside from giving me your DNA however unknowingly or unwillingly and then saving my life and accepting me as your sister and-!”

Yeah, I think I got the idea,” Buffy retorted dryly. “What was the point?”

Well, just that I gave all those little things to Joshua and he gave me something that's... that's like priceless,” Dawn half whined. “How can I-?”

Real friends don't count the cost of things,” Buffy pressed gently. “Not like that. And I bet that Joshua is thrilled with all the stuff you gave him. It wasn't just things,” she reminded her sister. “You put a lot of thought into those. Things that you like, that you think he likes and stuff that meant something to both of you. That's a better gift than just buying something expensive.”

Yeah, I guess that's true,” Dawn nodded. She smiled brightly. “I mean, Mom always adored those little chintzy things we made in art class, right?” Buffy nodded along with her sister.

So now here's the big question,” Buffy sighed and Dawn paused in her perusal of the painting and musing once more. “Where are we going to hang it?”

Oh, I was thinking maybe over the mantle,” Dawn grinned. “Or maybe in the dining room. By the mirror?”

Ehhh,” Buffy hedged, grimacing slightly.

What?” Dawn demanded, her tone rising in pitch. “You like this picture. You said so!”

Exactly,” Buffy nodded with a sage wisdom radiating from her. “And how often has Xander had to repair the living room or dining room over the last... how long?”

It hasn't been... that bad,” Dawn winced. “Okay, yeah, I see your point.”

Sooner or later, everything comes looking for a fight with the Slayer,” Buffy grunted. “Or a fight with someone in this house. Sometimes even those in the house go looking for a fight,” she added with a mirthless chuckle.

That's true,” Dawn sighed. “So what are we going to do?”

Well, I see five options, three of which I doubt you'll like,” Buffy chuckled, suddenly light hearted again. Or at least, as light hearted as she could muster herself up to be. “One, we could hang it in my room.”

Color scheme isn't right,” Dawn denied that request instantly. Her sister smirked at her, having already deduced what the answer would be. “Number two?”

There's Willow's room, which no, right?” Buffy shrugged one shoulder. “And the bathroom, which would be cool, but I wouldn't want people to think that we don't like it and are sticking it in there because... well, whatever.”

Yeah, no to those,” Dawn shook her head. “So that leaves...?”

Your room or the upstairs hallway,” Buffy declared. “Now, the hallway offers everyone that comes up the chance to see it and appreciate it, you'll see it every night before you go to bed and put a little smile on your face. Put it in your room and you take away the everyone else seeing it.”

Uh,” Dawn groaned. “Dilemma.”

I know,” Buffy smirked once more. She clapped one gentle hand on her sister's shoulder before turning away. “And it's your painting so it's all on you. Just let me know when you're ready to hang it. I'll borrow Xander's level.”

Oh!” Dawn half shrieked suddenly. “I have to show it to them. You know, in case I decide it's going in my room forever!”

All right,” Buffy nodded. “I'll send them up. Sorry, but I'm not up to lugging it down the stairs and then back up again.”

Okay,” Dawn nodded, her stomach twisting at the abrupt reminder of how close she had come to losing her sister yet again and in a more permanent manner than ever before.

Seattle, WA
Earlier in the day

Merry Christmas!” Max called as she pushed the door open to bring her motorcycle in with her. She took an appreciative sniff as Alec ambled along to the hallway. He reached for her bag, just like every time she stopped in, but this time she let him take it.

Gah,” he muttered through a yawn as he carried her loaded back pack to the table. She had already brought over the bulk of her presents earlier in the week and had found an old tree for Joshua to decorate as he would. “Big guy was up at five this morning, couldn't get me to his level excitement so he started cooking and wouldn't let me get into anything until you got here,” he complained. “Hope you brought something edible.”

There's some donuts in there, so shut up,” she offered good naturedly as she removed her coat and threw it on the back of the sofa. “It smells good in here.”

That's the aborted mulled cider,” Alec rolled his eyes as he dug through the pack for the bag of donuts that Max had carted along. His stomach was grumbling appreciably. “Scalded it, so he poured it off into a new pan and it's apparently now potpourri.”

Well, that's the whole purpose then, isn't it?” Max frowned in that special way she had. “To make the house smell good.” She winced slightly and hunched her shoulders as if preparing for catastrophe. “How's the chicken?”

Hasn't put it in yet, but he's been fussing over it,” Alec chuckled. Turkey or ham was usually the choice of the day, they all knew that. Unfortunately there had been a dearth on pork that summer and fall. And turkey was extremely pricey with it's lack of commercial availability. So Max had gotten the closest thing she could, which were several five pound chickens, all dressed according to directions that Logan had helpfully written out for them. She had helped Joshua figure out the menu for that day and figured that mac and cheese from a box would be easy enough. And all he had to do was defrost the pie and put it in the oven to warm. She knew about corn and green bean dishes as well, but those came out of a can, easy peasy. Some boxed mashed potatoes maybe and that boxed stuffing and they had little to worry about.

Well, stay out of the rest of my bag, okay,” she muttered as she turned and headed to the kitchen to greet her friend. She found him just inside the door of the kitchen. “Hey Joshua, Merry Christmas.”

Happy Holidays!” Joshua boomed back. “Max just in time. Put chicken in for hour. Then eat.”

Max's gaze roamed over the counters. Joshua had everything laid out in various degrees and seemed quite ready to go. “Smells good in here. Is the oven heated?”

Yes,” Joshua nodded. “Just wait few more minutes for Max. Vegetables right?” he asked, gesturing to the two pans on the stove top that each contained a chicken as well as some cut up potatoes, onions and carrots. There was a light dusting of something that held the heavy aroma, thyme, Max thought. She breathed in heartily, catching that as well as the potpourri.

Exactly right,” she nodded. “Is there some liquid in there? And where did you get the potatoes and stuff from?”

Chicken stock from can,” Joshua nodded. He pointed at the discards in the trash bin. “Alec call in favor,” he chuckled, answering the other question.

Excellent,” Max nodded. “Let's put them in.” They busied themselves for just a moment doing so and when the oven door was shut, she checked her watch. “Okay, we come back in 45 minutes to check on it and put the rest of the vegetables on. Is the pie out?”

Joshua once again gestured to the counter and Max saw the boxed dessert with a light rime of frost still on the edges. She nodded and patted his shoulder blade. “Ready to open presents now?” he asked hopefully and Max chuckled.

Of course,” she nodded. “It was so nice of you to wait while I dropped off Logan's to him.”

Yes,” Joshua nodded. “Logan like gifts?”

He loved them,” Max assured him. “He hung that painting up right away, in the front hallway. He is so proud to be one of the few people in the world that own an original Joshua!”

He's been making enough of 'em,” Alec scoffed through a mouthful of donut. He held the bag out to the bigger man as he passed by but Joshua shook his head in the negative.

Already ate breakfast,” he grunted as he took a seat right next to the tree. “Save appetite for lunch now.”

You already ate?” Alec's eyes went up in disbelief. “What? When!”

In morning, make eggs scrambled and toast,” Joshua grinned. “Offered to Alec, but didn't want to wake up.

Maybe if you had offered him coffee first,” Max chuckled. She was the same way some mornings.

Out of coffee,” Joshua informed her easily. “Had green tea instead.”

Oh, why didn't you say,” Max complained gently. “I can get some more for you. If you want.”

Or I have a can stashed,” Alec explained. “Might as well use it, since Josh doesn't drink that much of it.”

Okay,” Max nodded. “I'll head over tomorrow. Anything else you want?”

Alec, not wanting to question her good nature or spirit or whatever it was shrugged. “Maybe just a small list. We can haggle later,” he offered carefully. Max gave him a small smirk.

All right,” Max agreed. “Okay, Joshua, present time!”

As if he had been waiting for just that moment, he dove into the relatively small pile and began divvying up the packages of various sizes. Both Max and Alec were surprised to see that they had each gotten the other something, perhaps it was manners or Joshua's influence. But their interest in their own was pushed to the back as they saw Joshua running his fingers over the present that Dawn had sent to Joshua. The box was the largest there, though still not too big. He chuckled then and glanced up at Max.

Want to save specialness a little longer,” he explained before moving his hand to a different present. And though Alec kept examining with pleasure, the gift he had in his hands. Max waited to watch Joshua open his first gift, which turned out to be Cindy's. It was a two fold gift. One part was a very special, hard to find, really expensive hair conditioner. It was to be used twice a week and Cindy had written out the instructions for him. The next was a boxed set of books. Joshua was over the moon about it and carefully folded the paper away after studying it for a moment. When he saw Max watching, he grinned.

Need palimpsests,” he explained wryly and Max smiled indulgently. She quickly encouraged him to open more as she carefully tackled her own. Joshua was impressed when Logan gave him a nice box full of wafer crackers and cheese spreads with little pots of jam. And a jar of hot chocolate. The entire package was carefully put together with new things mixed with familiar, in a basket that Joshua could use later somewhere in the house.

They continued on, until at last was Dawn's solitary package. Alec leaned forward with the pocket knife that he had received from an admiring Normal who had sent it through Max. Joshua used it to open up the packaging and let out an exclamation when he opened the flaps.

Little little presents!” he sang out and began removing each from the box. No package was wrapped in the same paper twice and everyone's eyes grew wide when Joshua handed one of the gifts to Max.

Why don't you just open them one at a time?” she suggested gently, but Joshua's answering grin was wide.

Not for Joshua,” he replied and Max glanced at the shiny foil sticker that had her name written on it.

Oh, wow,” Max breathed out and noted that Joshua was holding one out for Alec, who looked completely mystified. “Is there a card or anything?” she wondered, surprised that a teen girl that she didn't know but barely, through the letters she had written to Joshua that he had allowed her to see, would be so sweet.

Aha,” Joshua nodded and held up the slim card that had been tucked in the side. He carefully worked the square envelope open and pulled out a festive card. He opened it and several things slid out. He glanced at them and laughed. “Picture of friends! Dawn promised.” He looked it over carefully and then laughed again. “Dawn say she have to sneak it from her sister's photo frame and make copy. Then sneak it back. There is Buffy, Willow and Xander. Says it was her mother's favorite picture.” He passed it over to Max who studied with interest the trio. The redhead had to be Willow and Xander was the male, so that left the petite blond as Dawn's elder sister. They looked so young to her jaded eyes. She glanced at the back and saw that someone, Dawn probably had written in small letters, Sunnydale, spring 2015 to explain at least part of the picture.

She glanced up, handing the picture to Alec, who was leaning in her direction. He took it and gave a low wolf whistle that had her rolling her eyes, before turning back to their larger friend who was opening another envelope. “What is it?” she wondered.

Oh, explains gifts for friends,” Joshua nodded. “Wanted to thank everybody for helping with her project and helping us become friends.”

That's so sweet of her,” Max cooed with surprise.

Might want to wait about saying that until after we open them,” Alec quipped and ducked back before Max's hand could shoot out. Her eyes promised retribution later. He smirked and turned to opening the flat package that Joshua had handed him. But he seemed to rescind his opinion automatically as he lifted out a pair of leather riding gloves from the box. “Oh man, these are top of the line!” He turned them over in his hands several times, obviously stunned before noting a small detail. “And look, she stitched something in the lining.”

Uh huh,” Joshua nodded. “Dawn say, Gaelic blessing to protect the wearer and keep hands warm when working.”

Cool,” Alec nodded. “I'll be wearing the hell out of these this winter.” He affected a shiver over the thought of the rainy Seattle weather. He carefully worked one of the gloves on and whistled again. “Man, I thought they were gonna be a little large, but whoa, perfect fit.”

Like a glove,” Joshua barked a laugh and Max joined in. “Now Max. Dawn say Max and Cindy's gift similar.”

Okay,” Max nodded. “Does she say what yours are? Or do I need to take that list from you?”

Dawn explain how she made or why she chose my gifts, no specifics,” Joshua explained as Max opened a very small jewelry box.

Oh, an anklet,” she breathed out as she worked it out of the box and her eye zoomed in on the links. “It's like a miniature charm bracelet.”

Joshua nodded as he and Alec both leaned over to examine it as well. “Dawn says she used handmade silver charms. Uh, pentagram means protection, not Satan worship,” he continued as Max turned it in her hands.

I actually knew that,” she told them. “And those are... ankhs? Egyptian cross of life, isn't it?”

And some other arcane symbols that mean life and protection,” Joshua agreed. He then lifted up Cindy's package. “Cindy has necklace in silver, like Max's. Dawn thought Max like for when riding motorcycle, not lose it as easy as necklace.”

Oh either way, it's an extremely nice gift,” Max decided as she started working her shoe off so that she could attach it around her ankle and then twisted her foot this way and that to admire it. Joshua chuckled and when she glanced up, Joshua was reading the list again. “What is it?”

Dawn get Logan a key chain,” he told her and Alec snorted. “Logo of Sunnydale newspaper. Dawn thought he'd like the motto.”

Well, we will definitely note his reaction,” Max nodded. “Now,” she leaned forward in anticipation, holding her hand out, “let me see that and you get to opening!”

Alec scooted a little closer so that he could see over Joshua's shoulder the four gifts that were left for the big guy. The first that he chose, Max understood as soon as she saw the disc in the case. It was listed as the one she promised she owed him for all his help. The title that had been printed on a label, was the presentation that had been recorded for her school assignment.

This is what she needed your help with?” Alec wondered as he read the title. Joshua nodded.

Three places in Washington to research,” he grinned and settled the disk on the side and reached for the next one as he explained. “Dawn tell Joshua she do the same for Sunnydale so Joshua know her home like she know ours.” He glanced down at the gift in his hand. “This number three, where's two?”

It's okay,” Max soothed. “You don't have to open them in order. I think she did that just so you knew which gift corresponded to which explanation. This one says that this one commemorates a once in a lifetime phenomena. Go ahead and open it Joshua.”

He paused for only a moment before he was ripping into it. When he removed the gift from the box, he found a snow globe. With a wondering smile he studied it as the tiny flurry from the motion of being opened settled and then saw a picture of Dawn's sister sitting with a man. They were smiling lovingly at one another and didn't seem to be aware of whomever took the picture. Joshua shook it up carefully and admired the way the snowy like substance swirled around the happy faces.

Hey, there's a note on the bottom,” Alec noted. Joshua grunted and turned the snow globe carefully. He worked his finger under the tape and opened up the small note.

'This is Buffy & her boyfriend from high school, Angel. Angel had a very hard life & when he was at his lowest, Buffy tried to convince him that life was more than pain & suffering. There was beauty & surprises around the corner. They were up on the cliffs above Sunnydale when it began to snow the first & only time in the history of the town. She brought him home & he's grown into one of the strongest men that I know.' Joshua read out, squinting a little to make out the tiny print.

Oh that's beautiful,” Max sighed happily. “She made that herself?”

Looks like it,” Alec nodded. “You can see where she had a little too much material there,” he gestured, pointing between the wooden base and the actual globe.

Makes it all the more special,” Joshua defended, but the other two just nodded their agreement. He sniffled slightly before reaching for the present listed as number two. Max dropped her eyes to the list in her lap.

This is the one that you need to have, because she wouldn't dare leave you out,” she read. “And she did the braiding herself. Willow was the one that suggested the material. Huh. Whatever that means,” she added. Though she was far from annoyed, more amused by the words she read out.

Alec gave her a puzzled look, but Max thought that she might already know and nodded to herself when Joshua opened a braided cord necklace. There was a strange gold symbol at the bottom.

Wicca protection,” Joshua declared as he swiftly looped the necklace over his head and carefully threaded his still slightly bushy mane out of the way before settling it on his chest. “Dawn told me, Willow practising Wicca ways since high school. Cord made specially in Wicca rite probably.”

Exactly,” Max smiled. “Probably blessings and protection.”

Long life and all that jazz,” Alec chuckled. “Now, what's that last one?” He gestured to the slim, flat package.

Max remained quiet, not listing what Dawn had written for this one as it seemed very personal. Joshua stripped the wrapping paper away and lifted up the book that Dawn had sent. Joshua gasped as his hands cradled the book and then hugged it to himself, glanced up at Max once and then back down to the book and carefully opened the cover.

A book?” Alec asked doubtfully. But Joshua was shaking his head.

Second edition Peter Pan,” he explained. “Belong to Joyce, Dawn and Buffy's mother. Favorite story to read when little.”

Oh man,” Alec seemed surprised. “That is a nice gift for you big guy. What're those?” he wondered, gesturing to where bits of paper were sticking out. His question caught his friends curiosity and Joshua turned to where the first was sticking up from between the pages. It turned out to be a picture of young Dawn in bed, her mother reading to her, both with soft smiles on their faces for the picture taker.

Joyce beautiful,” Joshua nodded. “Like Dawn said.” He carefully inserted the picture back in and turned to the next one. As soon as he saw it, he started laughing. Dawn was dressed up as Peter Pan and Buffy was Tinkerbell. A man that was not familiar stood behind the girls, looking proud and happy. “Must be their father,” Joshua decided. He continued roaming through the book, finding the copies of pictures that had Dawn, her family or friends, reading or being silly. When he closed the book, Max chuckled. “What?”

Dawn wrote how many pictures there were,” Max explained. “You haven't found them all yet.”

Joshua nodded and quickly explained. “Leave some for when I read,” he announced. “Find new pictures like new gift each time.”

That sounds like fun,” Max agreed. “It was a really good idea to share her pictures that way.”

Oh Alec, look,” Joshua chuckled as he turned back to one of the girl's friends. He had seen what was written on the back and it featured Xander, his face pinched up happily, his hands down by his sides and his legs were blurred. “Xander do Snoopy dance.”

It's an epileptic seizure dance?” Alec teased as he smirked at the photo. Both Joshua and Max looked and burst out laughing.

Maybe,” Max wheezed slightly. She might have said more, but her watch beeped, reminding her of the dinner that was cooking in the oven. She laid her hand on Joshua's shoulder. “You sit, enjoy your presents. Alec and I can get the veggies on.”

Yeah big guy,” Alec nodded quickly, feeling the glow of Christmas good will. “You've been a gracious host, so my turn, right?”

All right,” Joshua nodded. “Thank you.” He turned back to looking over the first page of the book, his finger sliding against the golden edged pages, absorbed instantly. Max hovered in the doorway for a moment, like a prideful mother watching over her young pup, before Alec's touch at her shoulder brought her back to the moment. She smiled up at him, glad that for once, they all finally had a family to share the true meaning of the holidays with.
